Default BTR into AU 1?

The auto box in my AU needs replacing and i was wondering if an auto from a 93 ED classic can be used? i know the bell housings need to be changed.

Does the AU auto function in any way different to the ED auto?

the auto can be used... i put one in my car cos i wanted to be able to check the oil with a dipstick...

thats interesting KRISTO, any other differences in operation, i had it in my mind the electrics might be a little different in the earlier ones?

Yep, they fit, and they work. Each year/model, the box's operation was changed slightly and smoothed out/refined, but essentially they are the same/similar and you'd be hard pressed to pick the difference. I had an NC box in my EL and it worked fine.

as JC said... they're pretty much the same...
you really couldn't tell the difference...

as i said.. i changed mine so it could have a dipstick, cos it annoyed me that i had to get underneath the car to check the oil on the box..

i was under the impression that you could retrofit a dipstick to the AU boxes
im pretty sure thats what my car has
and yes they're pretty interchangeable

was stupid to get rid of the dipstick i think..

i changed mine with an earlier box after mine blew up...

i believe that no trans dipstick was one of only an extremely small number of flaws about the AU Falcon.

having no dipstick wasnt such a bad move i know that many people who put dex3 in thier eb-el boxes destroying solenoids etc at least having no dipstick it takes at least some knowledge to even look at it in the first place

i disagree mate... as others have said... why not take the engine dipstick away too....

either way, i much prefer having a dipstick, everytime i check the car before a long trip i can check all the fluids..

Kristo: Because its fun to try and stick your finger in a small hole in the side of the gearbox, when you cant even fit your shoulder underneath the sideskirt due to your car being lowered so you can loosen a tight bolt on the side of said gearbox....

you can't really call it a flaw of the au tho, because it was removed in late model ef's to begin with...

as for putting an e series box in an au, i believe if you put a ba shifter in too, you can make use of all 4 gears as the e series boxes will hold first gear, unlike au ones...

Know exactly about this, had to have two mates lift the car by grabbing under the front wheel arches so we could slide a jack underneath (parked on a slope and jacked so it was level)

i have too side with the manufacturer on this one , a lot of the motoring public just don`t have a clue, auto oil can foam up and give you a false reading, dudes can over fill them, they froth out the tube and set fire to the car, i have seen this, better off to just have the auto serviced before a long trip or holiday season, if its up to date theres no problems. engine oil is much easier to check , as far as the engine dipstick goes as the engine gets older it needs more top ups, auto`s well serviced don`t.

Its always bodes-sh with the actual facts.

Oh late ef's hey. Makes sense, i started playing with taxis when all the EL's were on their second 'boxes already. Oh well scratch that, one less flaw in the AU.

When you say hold first, do you mean if you take off in 1st it won't shift up? Or you can manually downshift to it?
Cos i can do the first one but not the second.... But i think my automatic is a well-bred mongrel.

The AU transmission with AU controls will hold first due to the mechanical linkage, I believe. If you fit a BA SSS unit, the gear is then held electronically rather than mechanically (tells the solenoid/valve to hold gear and relies on line pressure), but the AU transmission doesn't like that, so it doesn't hold gear. The EF/EL solenoids/valves will hold enough line pressure so it works.

i understand that fully mik.. its a good point...
i guess though, it comes down to, if you don't know about it don't touch!
if only most people that didn't know followed this rule, they'd keep themselves out of alot of trouble...

Yeah any of the 4 speed boxes EA S2 - AU are interchangeable. The AU box is the pick of the bunch. The electrics have the same connectors.
I have an EB trans in my AU Turbo
You need to use the bellhousing off the car ie if you want to fit an AU with an EB trans you will need to use the bellhousing that suits. I cant recall if that is the donor bellhosing or the AU bellhousing its been a while..... little help?

i decided to go with an au2 auto as the ed unit was an unknown quantity and according to ford facts the au auto's are geared to work with the intech engine and have a better shift???
