Last year I picked up an afx bathurst slot car set for $5, I use it occasionally but im looking into getting a scalextric set soon.
Does anyone here have scalextrics? Ive been told that there are digital sets with overtaking lanes etc. Also, I visited my dad last week & took a photo of his old slot cars that he had when he was a youngen. (I know this isnt a toy forum but im sure some people here would have slot cars) |

i have a lot of scalextric cars but havent used them in ages. they are great fun and the detail and quality of the cars available now is incredible compared to 10 - 15 years ago. i preferred them before they had magnets stuck to the bottom...yes they corner faster, but IMHO it is an unrealistic scale speed. besides, sliding the cars and balancing them through corners was a lot more fun. those cars you showed look like very early models. nice looking too.
the digital sets allow cars to change lanes and over take and run multiple cars in the same lane. on older sets, you could only run one car in a lane. if you tried two, they slowed down to a crawl.

Go to a good large toy shop, and you'll be amazed at how much stuff is still available to fix old slot cars and sets...much of the stuff is still interchangeable or rebuildable. Ebay is another great source of parts.

If I had the space, I'd like to build a big table with one of those Bathurst slot car sets on it, and do a full diorama and landscape build of it, like a train set but with a slot car track, a replica of the countryside and up and down of the mountain...that would be great!

surprisingly easy to build your own proper track, big piece of MDF and a router and you're on your way.

my son was given a scalextric 'start' set for his 3rd birthday. then we gave hime some more straight sections for his 4th birthday, he also scored a lightning mcqueen and Francesco from the cars movie.
i did purchase a pdf with the australian V8 supercar track layouts with all the dimensions and a list of what track bits you need to buy to setup the whole track.. started getting expensive when i looked at setting up a track - was about $1700 for the track bits alone for a medium sized track (not bathurst). maybe when he is bigger and i get richer i'll setup his track properly, not just on the loungeroom floor for a few days. i also scored a complete older scalextric track on a council clean up pile. is a bit dirty and rusty looking, but it should clean up nicely.

Digital Scalextic will allow up to 8 cars running on 2 lanes simultaneously. You can buy tracks that allow the swapping of lanes and you press a button on the controller just before the lane change to change lanes. You can also get lane dividers that will allow you to have 3 lanes in certain sections. Such a method could be used for a pit lane and I believe Scalextric have a pit lane game that simulates stopping for a pit stop. How it is works is that each car has a digital signature programmed to the throttle and as such each car must have a digital ship installed in them. Most new cars come with an easy fit chip sold separate, but for older cars you have to open up the car and installed it the hard way.
Digital is great for groups of people but I prefer the old 1 car per lane method that we are all familiar with. I collected enough track over the years to build the Bathurst layout however I have found that often those layouts you find on the internet don't quite work in the real world and a little modification to the layout is required. Building the Bathurst circuit was the first thing I did when I moved out of my parents place into my own place. It took up the entire lounge room. I had plans to put the circuit on a table and fill it with scenery to represent a 90s era Bathurst but I realised that the circuit plans typically are waaaay under scale to the size of 1/32. more like 1/72. Realising that I needed a lot more space killed those plans so now I just have a fancy figure 8 setup on a table top. Scalextric have also been releasing come vintage atcc cars over the last few years too. So far I have collected a Bob Jane Cortina, 2x Bob Jane Camaros, 2x Moffet Mustangs, 3x Torana L34s and a Moffet Coupe. This year there was a release of another L34 and another Mofffet Coupe but I have not collected them yet. In the past there was the 3 sierras of Johnson, Bowe and Brock, there was also the 1966 Bathurst winning Mini and a Mckean(?) Cortina. Easy enough to get decals online too if you want to repaint the cars in to the liveries you want. I believe I saw a Bartlet Camaro done this way. I have a few pics here and there which I'll find and post. I have also collected some pit buildings and grid girls from Carrera to add a little more scenery.

OK Here are my photos..... They are a few months old, if not a year and doesn't show the latest stuff I have collected such as the moffet coke mustang or the moffet dealer team coupe. Check back on the link later and I'll add some new photos for those when I can.
This is also the first time I have shared photos directly from my storage server at home so please let me know if it doesn't work. http://www.mystora.com/share/tryptic...or/Scalextric/
